Business key handover checklist

A business handover,
with fewer loose ends.

A change of staff or occupancy is a useful moment to review physical keys. Begin with an entrance list and the person who can authorize changes. A suite and a shared exterior door may need different approvals.

DOOR & CONTROL
01

Record the current arrangement

List the doors, their owners or managers and the keys in circulation. Identify staff entrances separately from shared building access. Note any restricted or existing managed system. If records are incomplete, say so rather than treating an uncertain key count as proof that all copies have been returned.

02

Choose the change you need

When hardware works and the goal is different key access, rekeying compatible cylinders may fit the request. A worn cylinder, loose handle or door that will not latch needs its own assessment. Explain both issues so a key change is not mistaken for a complete door repair.

03

Arrange the approving contact

Give the street address, suite and accessible entrance. Name the person who can meet the technician and approve a revised estimate if inspection changes the scope. Ask which parts, keys and visits are included. A building owner or manager may need to approve changes to shared hardware.

04

Leave a useful record

At completion, test the keys and agreed door operation. Record what changed, which entrances still use earlier keys and how many new copies were issued. Keep that record with the responsible manager. Commercial locksmith preparation provides more detail about describing the door and fault.
