Start with a door list

Walk through the property and count the locks you actually want included. The front door may not be the only keyed entrance: check the side door, the door from the garage and any separate unit. Decide whether these should share a key or stay separate. Different keyways or hardware families may limit what can be combined.

What changes and what stays

The visible handle or deadbolt may remain while the cylinder is adjusted for a different key. Ask which old keys should stop operating the changed cylinders and which doors are outside the agreed scope. An unchanged lock elsewhere will still need its existing key. A simple written door list avoids confusion at handover.

Choose repair when there is a fault

If the key catches, the cylinder is loose or the bolt will not seat, explain that behavior before asking only for a rekey. The cause may involve the lock, the door or both. Replacing sound hardware solely because a new key is needed can be unnecessary; retaining damaged hardware solely to avoid replacement can also leave the original problem unresolved.

Test the result

Try every supplied key in every agreed cylinder with the door open first, then check normal locking and unlocking while access is maintained. Confirm the number of copies you need.
